Special Umuganda in Kabatwa Sector Protects Farms and Residents from Wild Animals

On 13 February 2026, a special Umuganda was held in Kabatwa Sector to prevent wild animals from Volcanoes National Park from damaging crops and posing safety risks to local residents. The initiative was organized by the Special Guarantee Fund (SGF) in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and Kabatwa Sector authorities.

The event brought together SGF staff, RDB representatives, community members, local leaders, and Mugwaneza Diane Gloria from Umuvunyi (anti-corruption), who reminded participants of the importance of transparency and contributing to the fight against corruption.

Florence Nibakure, Acting Director General of SGF, emphasized that safeguarding farms and residents from wild animals is a top priority. She explained that the project, which began in Mahama Sector in Kirehe District, is now extending to areas near Volcanoes National Park. The plan involves constructing a robust stone wall to prevent animals from entering farmland and residential areas. Kabatwa Sector in Nyabihu District and Bugeshi Sector will benefit from the initiative, ensuring protection of both crops and human safety.

Uwingeri Prosper, representing RDB, highlighted the growing threat of illegal hunting, which endangers wildlife and residents alike while affecting tourism. He reminded communities near national parks that they benefit financially from tourism; for instance, Kabatwa Sector received 150 million Rwandan francs this year through revenue-sharing. He encouraged residents to actively fight illegal hunting and the use of traps that harm animals.

Local farmer Pascasie Mukabarisa expressed her gratitude for the project. “This initiative will help protect our farms and keep our families safe. While compensation is provided for damages, it is far better to prevent harm before it happens,” she said.
